South Africa's 86-page draft national AI policy, gazetted on 10 April, cites at least six academic articles that News24 says were almost certainly fabricated by an AI tool; editors of three journals confirmed the papers never appeared. Communications minister Solly Malatsi ordered an investigation, faced cross-party calls to withdraw the draft, and has since withdrawn it.
Kanpur police arrested chemistry lecturer Akhilesh Yadav and tuition teachers Sandeep Chandra Vishwakarma and Nirmal Kumar at a Uttar Pradesh Home Guard recruitment exam, saying the two teachers were improperly made room inspectors and that a closed NCC room had been readied with a printer to copy the paper and AI to answer it. All three were sent to jail.
